The FRIENDS OF ST. MARY’S include many residents of Stratton who value having a living, active church in the village. “The Friends” is not a religious organisation, some members may not hold a particular faith, they may be agnostic, they may have never been inside the Church. But the mutual understanding between all is to preserve this ancient Church which dates from the 14th century.
“The Friends” was formed 12 years ago for the purpose of raising funds for maintenance of the fabric of the Church. Through subscriptions and generous donations, the larger projects to date have included the restoration of the five church bells, upgrading the heating and lighting, providing notice boards and a new altar frontal.
Social events also help to contribute financially, these being The Scrumptious Summer Stratton Cream Teas, and concerts. The Friends also organise the Lent Soup Lunches within the Church, proceeds going to Christian Aid.
Continual improvement and care is of paramount importance for a Church that began life 700 years ago. This is where Stratton residents can help! For a very small sum of £10 a year, you can become a member of “The Friends”, and thus contribute to the care of your village Church.
If you wish to become a Friend, please contact our Membership Secretary, Penny Wilson, at 1 Furbers Paddock, or by phone 264229, or email firstname.lastname@example.org
There is a small Friends Committee who meet four times a year, with the AGM in March. A copy of the Minutes will be emailed to you following each meeting.
Help to keep your village Church alive.
